Introduction to Peptides: Your Guide to Harnessing Their Power in Health and Wellness
Welcome to the GetHealthy Store’s free webinar series on peptides, presented by Dr. Tracey Stroup, ND, the Chief Health and Growth Officer at GetHealthy Stores. Peptides are fast becoming a staple in advanced health practices, and for good reason! This blog will give you an introductory glance at what peptides are, their functions, and how they can be strategically used in your health practice.
What are Peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, typically comprising 2 to 50 amino acids. Unlike proteins, which are longer chains, peptides are small but mighty. They play crucial roles in a range of biological functions, from hormone regulation to immune responses. Here's a breakdown of key functions and characteristics:
Hormonal Peptides: These act as signaling molecules regulating physiological processes. Insulin and oxytocin are prime examples.
Neuropeptides: Function within the nervous system. Endorphins and Substance P modulate pain perception.
Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs): Destroy bacteria, viruses, and fungi, contributing to the immune system.
Enzyme Inhibitor Peptides: Regulate biochemical reactions by inhibiting specific enzymes.
Peptides can be either naturally occurring or synthetically produced. Natural peptides are derived from living organisms, while synthetic peptides are scientifically constructed amino acid sequences. Both types offer unique benefits and are used in various therapeutic applications, from treating diabetes to cancer.
Administration Methods
Peptides can be administered in several ways to achieve desired outcomes:
Injectable Peptides: Used subcutaneously (under the skin), intramuscularly, or intravenously for immediate or extended effects.
Transdermal Peptides: Applied through patches, creams, or gels for slow, sustained release.
Nasal and Sublingual Peptides: These are absorbed through mucous membranes for rapid action, particularly beneficial for brain-related treatments.
Oral Peptides: Advanced formulations that prevent degradation in the digestive system. These are available in the GetHealthy Store!
Legal Considerations
Most peptides are labeled for research use because the FDA has not yet fully categorized them. However, many peptide therapies are already in therapeutic and cosmetic use, proving to be safe and highly beneficial.
Targeted Solutions for Your Practice
